EMPOWER is a collaborative project incorporating the efforts of University of Louisville Fine Arts students and kids living at St. Joseph’s Children’s Home. The project intended to teach children growing up in difficult circumstances the art and skills of photography to encourage them to appreciate the beauty and dignity of their own expression. UofL Professor Mary Carothers directed the project as part of a new UofL class called Collaborative Projects.
The UofL students encouraged the children to imagine what kind of superhero they’d want to be, and then they came up with costumes to turn the children into superheroes. The resulting studio portraits equally show the creativity of the college art students and the children. In related projects, the students and children made light-painting photographs, black and white darkroom photograms, and the kids took pictures made with plastic cameras.
