SNAPSHOT is an art exhibit of photographs inspired by the snapshot aesthetic. Since around 1900, when Kodak came out with the first snapshot camera for amateur photographers and children, photographs have become an integral part of modern life and the way we remember personal experience. The seven local photographers whose work makes up this exhibit each are inspired by the casual magic that a camera can achieve. They are still impressed that by the simple click of a button, life can be stilled and saved on paper. Some of these artists have used plastictoy cameras to make this artwork, letting chance and the limitations of the simple cameras help form the outcome. Other artists have reprinted old photographs in new ways. For the Lost and Found series Shaffer re-printed a collection of found black and white glass slides that had undergone some serious deterioration. Courtney Hughes reprinted old family photos collaged with her grandfather’s journal entries.
In conjunction with the Snapshot exhibit, there will also be a photography workshop called the Interpretation Project. It will be led by artist Leslie Doyle who begins teaching photography at UofK this semester. Find out more about the Interpretation Project photo workshop and sign up by clicking here.
