‘Our Neighborhood’ is an exhibit about the neighborhoods surrounding 930 Mary Street - Germantown, Schnitzelberg, Shelby Park, The Highlands. The exhibit is made up of four distinct projects.
‘Our Neighborhood Then and Now’ is a photographic study of how locations around us have changed in the last 50-100 years. Using vintage photographs from the University of Louisville Photo Archives, a sojourn visual arts photography class completed the assignment of re-photographing the same places as found in the vintage photographs. The old black and white images are shown next to the new color images, making strong contrasts between what the area looked like in the early and mid-1900’s compared to today.
In another project within the exhibit Bradley Speaks will create a map of the neighborhood directly on the gallery wall. Visitors will be invited to add to the map by adding personal details about their experiences in the neighborhood.
Making a different sort of map, Michael Winters has created highly detailed photo studies of two backyards. By organizing backyards into grid squares and photographing each of the grid squares from an aerial perspective, the finished artworks, made up of dozens of individual photographs, are reminiscent of romanticized Google Earth pictures.
The final project in the exhibit is a video loop by William Wallace featuring interviews with long-term neighborhood residents and business owners.
