Inner Child: Paintings by Joseph Southard
on view December 5, 2008 - January 4, 2009 in the 2nd floor gallery.
Joseph Southard returns to some of his childhood fears in this series of large-scale paintings. The fear of heights, flying, and death are reoccurring themes, though they are all candy-coated in bright colors, reminiscent of children’s books.
Joseph sees this process of remembering his childhood thoughts to be a helpful reminder of a time when real fears were fewer, and irrational fears were at least filled with wonder and imagination. He’s found that trying to see the world again in a child-like way has given him a tool with which he can melt away skepticism and worry.
