2012 Press Release

The 930 Art Center closes, Sojourn Gallery opens

posted on 08/27/2012

Photographs from the last exhibition at the 930 Art Center have come down and the walls will remain white and unadorned because the doors have been permanently shut to the viewing public. A chapter has come to a close for the gallery that has shown the beautiful (a painting of a dress made out of department store shopping bags) to the fantastical (a 25-foot cardboard fighter jet plane touching noses with a flying goose) for the sake of encouraging meaningful art. The closing could be interpreted as an unfortunate event, however, it’s simply a matter of relocation.

The art gallery, which is part of the vision and mission of Sojourn Community Church, is moving to the other side of the tracks, literally, from Germantown to Shelby Park. Sojourn purchased and renovated St. Vincent’s de Paul cathedral, which is a block away from the 930 building, to accommodate a growing congregation and they’re taking the gallery with them.

Sojourn started the gallery twelve years ago as a way to connect with the Louisville community and meet the needs of artists at various stages in their careers. Photographer Michael Winters is Sojourn’s Director of Visual Arts and Gallery Director and has been busy prepping the new Sojourn Gallery for the first exhibit, Lovetown, PA by New York based artist Gene Schmidt with photography by Alicia Hansen, opening August 25th. Fortunately, Michael was able to answer a few questions amidst the hammering and nailing of the new space.

Julie Gross: How does an art gallery add to the church experience?

Michael Winters: It’s beneficial to both the church and for artists. For the church, it gives people the opportunity to see things from a different perspective and to see the value of imagination. The church already uses preaching and music and visual art is another way to see things.

JG: Should more churches adopt having a contemporary art gallery?

MW: It’s certainly an extra, but I believe that God is extravagant. He’s extravagant in the way he’s made the world. There’s not this utilitarian way of working, God does things grand and he values flourishing. I think having a gallery in a church is an expression of that attribute of God.

JG: How do you decide what goes on the walls?

MW: Some people ask what will you not show, but, given our unique context of being a public art gallery operated by a church, I instead ask what is best to show. I want the new gallery to show art that affirms, challenges or encourages the identity of Sojourn church.

The Sojourn Gallery will be new in place and in mission. Michael states, “exhibits will bring a greater focus to artwork that is meaningful to the church, but still be interesting and valuable to the public at large.”

The Sojourn Gallery is located in Sojourn Church’s new facility at St. Vincent’s de Paul Cathedral at 1207 S. Shelby Street, Louisville, KY. Hours are on Sunday’s during church services and exhibit openings. For more information go to sojournvisualarts.com. (Please note that as of 2016 the domain of sojournvisualarts.com. appears to have been bought by a Chinese company and is no longer affiliated with the Sojourn Church.)

2011
THE 930 MISSION STATEMENT

The 930 exists to facilitate the creation, understanding, promotion, and enjoyment of meaningful and beautiful visual art, music, and community.

WHO WE ARE / HISTORY
The 930 is owned and operated by SOJOURN COMMUNITY CHURCH. Sojourn began having public worship services in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville in the fall of 2000. The new church was made up mostly of young creative types eager to see a church where genuine spiritual growth and community was taking place. By 2006 the church was ready to purchase a building of its own. We knew that we didnt want our building to go unused every day of the week except Sunday and because of our high concentration of artists and musicians, creating an art and music venue in our building was a natural way for us to extend our resources and gifts as a blessing to our city.

Many have asked why a church would run a music venue and art gallery. The answer is actually quite simple. Christian belief begins with the idea that God is a creative Being who made everything in the universe. The story of history is one of God making things and restoring things. He made humanity in His image, as creative creatures that follow His pattern, making and re-making things. Because of this belief, we believe that Christians should be the first to celebrate works of creativity and beauty because we believe them to be reflective of the Creator’s own nature. We don’t believe that this creative gift was given to Christians only – instead, God gives all kinds of people this gift and means for all of it to be celebrated and shared.

It is our hope that the 930 Art Center can provide a space where people can come together from various backgrounds and worldviews to find common ground, community, and gain a vision for a more beautiful world.
